CHOMA ANTIQUE METROPOLİS

CHOMA ANTIQUE METROPOLİS

Ancient City of Choma: Overview and Geographic Placement

Choma, known alternately as Homa or Khomai, emerged as a modest settlement nestled within the mountainous heart of the ancient Lycian terrain. Presently situated within Antalya Province's Elmalı district, it lies adjacent to the western slopes of the Elmalı Plain, approximately 15 km to the west of Elmalı's town center, at an altitude of roughly 1,000-1,100 meters above sea level.

Chronicle and Importance

•      Etymology and Establishment: The nomenclature of the city is derived from a Greek term meaning "Mounds" or "Heap," indicative of its rugged geographical features. It is thought to have played a significant role as a settlement and agricultural hub during the Lycian League era.

•      Cultural Significance: As one of the 24 cities endowed with voting rights in the Lycian League, Choma had representation in the League’s governing council (Lyciarch), underscoring its political relevance within the region. Its existence continued throughout the Roman Imperial Period.

•      Surrounding Cities: Its close proximity to notable Lycian cities like Podalia (modern-day Kozpınar) and Akalisso (Karaköy) further solidified its role within the broader regional network of communities.

Principal Remains and Structures

Choma preserves modest remnants characteristic of a Lycian highland city:

1.    Acropolis: A small fortified structure (acropolis) established atop the highest natural rock formation in the settlement.

2.    Necropolis: The most prominent ruins include Lycian-style sarcophagi and rock-cut tombs. The sarcophagi are generally plain, with certain examples showing inscriptions and basic relief work.

3.    City Walls: Remnants of stone fortification walls can be traced surrounding both the acropolis and the wider settlement area.

4.    Sacred Area / Temple: The foundation remnants thought to relate to a modest temple or sacred site are situated within the city limits.

5.    Civic Structures and Water Management: The remains of houses, cisterns, and potential bath complex elements can be observed throughout the settlement zone.

6.    Inscriptions: Greek and Lycian inscriptions located within the vicinity have offered vital insights into the city’s governance, societal structures, and religious practices.

Present Condition and Accessibility

•      Archaeological Findings: Choma has not benefited from systematic, detailed excavations and is primarily recognized through surface surveys and epigraphic research.

•      Access: Visitors can reach the site via rural roads leading westward from Elmalı town. The roads may be unpaved, and the challenging terrain may necessitate hiking.

•      Travel Guidance: This site offers an intriguing locale for those intrigued by Lycian culture and mountain urbanism. The ruins blend harmoniously with the natural environment, providing a tranquil ambiance. Ideal visiting times are during spring or autumn, as there are no guiding services or visitor facilities available.

In conclusion: Choma serves as a crucial link to comprehending the region's political fabric, marking it as one of the "lost mountain cities" of the Lycian League. Instead of grandiose monuments, the site stands as an authentic archaeological location reflecting the simple lifestyle and unique character of Lycia's heartland.
